When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the friction of flying alone. It then quickly adjusts its mistake and moves back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it. The lesson we can learn here is to be humble to admit the challenges we face and to seek help as soon as we get stuck. This humility will enable you, your team, your family and your company to move faster and achieve more.

Flying in a V-formation increases the visibility as every goose can see what’s happening in front of them. The lesson here is to make our organizations visible in both org-chart directions. Having top-down visibility enables leaders to stay connected with the edges of the organization to make better informed decisions. Bottom-up visibility enables employees to see the bigger picture, engages them, and empowers them to better align themselves with the organizational objectives.
Pharaoh wanted to keep the Hebrews enslaved. Israel simply wanted freedom. Nothing has really changed since the beginning of time. We all simply want freedom. We must accept the only One that can set us free from sin that has enslaved us and only then will the Truth Set You Free. Even the geese want Goose Freedom.
Irma did a number on us all. It is said that geese will often avoid a hurricane by flying beyond its reach. That did not happen so much with Irma with the width of this monster storm. Hey, even people trying to evacuate Irma often moved closer not knowing the direction it was going. I have only seen one family of geese this week and they were in Kingsland eating tall grass along HWY 40. But, the resilience of this magnificent bird will be visible very soon. If you have a Irma story or a goose/Irma story I would love to hear it.
Did you know geese can fly upside down? During flight, geese can twist their necks to flip their bodies upside down, while keeping their heads upright. They will do this to avoid predators like hawks and even to avoid a strong wind. It allows them to lower their altitude in a big hurry. So what does a goose do during a hurricane. They do just like people do. They eat and sleep and try to move around normally. Sometimes they have to just hunker down and stay put when the wind is stronger than they are.
Geese, like all migratory birds are supreme masters of weather management. They can fly thru and around strong winds, correct their course when blown astray and even use a hurricane to slingshot themselves forward at a very fast speed. Geese can perform amazing abilities beyond anything we can do. They can detect air pressure changes that tell them a storm is coming so they can prepare for a coming storm. Me? I've been sitting in front of a television broadcasting storm warnings for nearly a week to prepare for Irma. The professional broadcasters just never get it nailed down for us to make the preparations we may have needed to make. Of course, there are people that also ignore all warnings and end up with poor results for themselves and their property. What is freedom to you? And why would a goose need freedom? I thought they were free birds coming and going as they pleased. And why would you need freedom? Are we not free to do as we please when we please?
I've spent a little over a year now reading, researching, and watching geese. They are quite interesting. I have my book outline and a few chapters completed but have not exactly had the notion to put it all together. It is time to think of this project as a job with a deadline and just do it. I have created a Goose Freedom Facebook page to stir some interest in my project and to encourage self to get to writing.
This is a praiseworthy day. It started at 630 am as new residents to the island, Garry and Karen, joined me to catch a goose. Yes, catch a goose. Have you ever tried? You most likely will not do it alone. One particular goose, within these three families of geese, had the misfortune of having a fishing lure with two treble hooks attached to himself. Two of the hooks were thru his left web foot and the other hook was in the back of his leg. Likely, the goose had stepped on the lure and got hooked and trying to break away he shook his foot and the hook caught behind his leg. It had been attached for a while and I and others had observed him every day this week. As he walked, or tried to walk, the lure was under his foot and would pull into his leg with each step. This is a very difficult situation for the goose. So Garry is feeding the 29 geese and 17 ducks bread trying to get close enough to catch this one goose. They kept moving as we three got closer and when cornered they took flight. Finally, his family was separated into a corner and started escaping by flying over us but my friend Garry was fast enough to catch the goose and surgery was quickly administered to the poor fellow. He is still limping but should recover soon. Thank you Garry and Karen for your encouragement and able assistance setting the goose free.

I'm a wanna be writer but until recently only dabbled with personal stories and illustrations. My true joy is my relationship with God and family. Then comes the Christian music and technology. I am retired and occasionally work part time but when not too occupied I'm writing a book that I call Goose Freedom. Archives
